"Sometimes I think that I'm bigger than the sound"

My favorite band of the past 13 years played the Roseland Ballroom on Wednesday night and not even a suffocating sea of obnoxious music geeks packed into a notoriously cavernous venue could stop me from seeing them play. They were only playing two dates in NYC and we had already heard about the hijinks from the first night's show (Karen O's unabashed, show-stopping energy and propensity for spitting beer into the audience was a selling point).

I don't know who opened for them and frankly who cares. Although they were a bit late in starting, once they hit the stage the YYYs were unstoppable. They are among the most earnest and heartfelt performers I've ever seen, and their fervent honesty beguiles the masses. Or at least placates them with infective, thudding beats.

"Y Control" was phenomenal. "Phenomenon" was phenomenal. Their only shortfall was neglecting to play "Art Star", as everyone had expected. But I'm pretty sure the YYY's don't give a fuck about expectations.

You know that their YYY logo would make a great nouveau hipster menorah. No pyrotechnics, just a gigantic logo backdrop that seemed diminutive when fronted by the enormous sound.

And as a part of their orgiastic finale, Karen O burst into flames. Not really but isn't that what she looks like? A flaming ball of rock n' roll. She actually came back onstage for the encore dressed in a scrappy Halloween skeleton-cum-StevieNicks outfit. "They don't love you like I love you..."

The Yeah Yeah Yeah's long-anticipated new album is
Show Your Bones. In stores now. In my head for weeks. Touring through the UK and then hitting Europe. Hard.
